They don't make long-distance migrations and remain in the Gulf of Mexico year-round.Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, Maryland, was awarded a $165,914,899 task order for Sentinel support. TPWD said the Rice's whale is one of the few types of baleen whales to prefer warmer, tropical waters.Rice's whales are typically seen alone or in pairs. The whales gulp huge amounts of water, then close their mouth to squeeze water through the sides and catch the tiny prey on their baleen's bristles. They are baleen or toothless whales because their unique mouths are used to filter food from water. They dive deeper during the day to feed on small planktonic animals.Based on limited data, scientists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) believe Rice’s whales spend most of their time within about 50 feet of the water’s surface.Like Bryde’s whales, Rice’s whales have three prominent ridges in front of their blowhole.Rice's whales are dark gray on top with a pale or pink belly. Their body is s leek and their pectoral fins are slender and pointed. They're smaller than other whales but grow up to 42 feet long and weigh as much as 30 tons or 60,000 pounds, which is five times heavier than an elephant, according to TPWD. ![]()
